New music releases just announed

April 4, 2014

This is “What’s Making Me Happy This Week,” a weekly feature inspired by the Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast. It’s pretty self-explanatory.

What’s Making Me Happy This Week are a couple of follow-up albums that were announced this week. Around this time last year I wrote about all the exciting new releases on the slate for 2013. It was an absolute all-star list: among many other personal favorites, the StrokesYeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, The National, MGMT and Arcade Fire all released new records in 2013. This year the list is not nearly as deep, but two of the albums announced this week have me really pumped.

First, Jack White announced that his new album, Lazaretto, the follow-up to his 2012 solo debut Blunderbuss, will be released in June. Lately I’ve soured on White – especially after his meltdown at Radio City Music Hall which left me and thousands of others high and dry – but I can’t deny that the man is a musical genius. Blunderbuss was probably my favorite alum of 2012 and arguably better than any of his efforts as part of the White Stripes. I’m sure that there will be some surprises on the new record but I’m equally sure that it will be one of the best releases of 2014. The first song, “High Ball Stepper”, has been released; here the video:

Meanwhile, New York band Parquet Courts have announced the follow-up to their debut album, Light Up Gold, also to be released in June. The new album is called Sunbathing Animal and – like “High Ball Stepper” – the first single (the title track) will be made available on Record Store Day, April 19. Light Up Gold, from early 2013,was easily my favorite album from a new artist released last year, and I’ve already written about the incredible EP the band put out later last year, Tally All the Things That You Broke. With song titles like “What Color Is Blood”, “She’s Rollin” and “Duckin and Dodgin”, I’m expecting more of the same raw guitar-heavy rock sound and smart lyrics that Parquet Courts are becoming known for. You can listen to “Sunbathing Animal” here.

And That’s What’s Making Me Happy This Week.
