Two Bands With Plans for 2014: Dum Dum Girls and Tokyo Police Club

December 13, 2013

This is “What’s Making Me Happy This Week,” a weekly feature inspired by the Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast. It’s pretty self-explanatory.

What’s Making Me Happy This Week are two bands that have been quiet for a little while but have big plans for 2014. On Wednesday I purchased tickets for two shows happening in the spring, Dum Dum Girls at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 26 and Tokyo Police Club at Webster Hall on May 15.

Dum Dum Girls have been sending emails to their fans of late, building anticipation for what will be a jam-packed first 3 months of 2014 for the indie noise rock band. Their next album, Too True, will be released at the end of January, complete with album release shows in NYC (at Mercury Lounge, Jan 30) and LA (Jan 28). You can download the first song off of Too True, “Lost Boys and Girls Club”, here or watch the video below. After the record release shows the band will spend all of March and early April on a U.S. tour, which hits NY for the aforementioned show in Brooklyn and a show the night before at Bowery Ballroom. If you don’t know the DDG’s, I highly recommend their low-fi debut album – which I instantly fell in love with – and then go see them at one of their live shows. I’ve seen them perform live once – they put on a kick-ass set at the late Maxwell’s in Hoboken, with support from Widowspeak (great photos I found online here)- and can’t wait to see them again in January and March.

Meanwhile, over on the more pop side of indie, Tokyo Police Club has been preparing for their busiest year in quite some time. A new album has been promised for 2014 (the band’s first since 2010), and while there is no title or release date yet, just yesterday they put out the first single from the album, and it comes in at nine minutes long (video below). Initial tour dates for 2014 can be found here; as mentioned, I’ll be at the May 15 NYC show which, like with DDGs, will be my second time seeing the band live. Back in 2012 I saw TPC at Bowery Ballroom (pictures & setlist) for a show they did with Hollerado, which was my introduction to that band that I now love.

New singles, new albums, shows to look forward to, finding new bands through the bands you love (like I did with Widowspeak and Hollerado) … even in the cold of winter, when “new” things are often few and far between, there is always something exciting on the horizon.

And That’s What’s Making Me Happy This Week.
